Is this not achieved via the gui configuration? Can understand the premise, having the items show automatically, but with a couple of mouse clicks, the end user obtains that same result.

I want this myself. My rationale is...
Yes, I can make separate profiles for different characters, but that is too complicated.
The default behaviour out of the box should be what people expect and (especially with the HUD) you don't ever want it showing things you can't do yourself.
So I think the correct default behaviour is to show what you can do yourself and the rest should only turn on when you tell it you. Then the largest percentage of users (myself included) don't have to change the settings ever.

Question, should auto display selection be based on the character's professions, or on what is currently being tracked?

Or should there be options for both?

Also, what should the new defaults be?

Posting an IRC log of Kinesia's feedback.
[17:10] <Kinesia> Professions. Some people with two gathering professions still follow HUD paths and switch tracking as they go.
[17:11] <Kinesia> Tying it to tracking isn't a bad idea though. If it's not hard an option for that too would be good, but it's less important.
[17:12] <Esamynn|Work> Kinesia: filtering by current track is what is currently implemented
[17:12] <Esamynn|Work> the other is just as easy to do
[17:12] <Esamynn|Work> and is about another 15 min work at this point
[17:12] <Esamynn|Work> I'm thinking the defaults should be
[17:12] <Esamynn|Work> filter by track: off
[17:12] <Esamynn|Work> filter by prof: on

Reopening: Gatherer does not recognize the profession of a character when logging in with fresh SV. Reloading the interface solves the problem.

Have seen this with Herbalism - haven't tested others.

This is a problem with the skills scanning code. It appears to be scanning too early, and then unregisters the event, and so does not scan ever again.

This issue affects both Herbalists and Miners.

rev 714 fixes the implementation problem with collecting the player's profession skill levels

Verified in dev/Trunk- Gatherer automatically detects and changes based on profession.
